What is anxiety disorder?

All of us feel little nervous, worried and fearful during challenging situations but when this feeling of nervousness, worry and fear reaches to such extreme that it starts disrupting our daily lives, thinking, perceiving and behaviours then it becomes disorder.

What are the symptoms of anxiety disorder?

  • Worry
  • Restlessness
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty sleeping due to racing thoughts or excessive worry
  • Difficulty focussing or lack of concentration
  • Dry mouth
  • Numbness
  • Shaking or tingling in the hands and feet
  • Muscle tensio
  • Nausea or abdominal cramps
  • Augmented heart rate
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cold or sweaty hands or feet
  • Fatigue

How many types of anxiety disorders are there?

There are several kinds such as Panic disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Phobias, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (excessive and unrealistic worry without any real cause).

What are the symptoms of Panic disorder?

  • Pounding heart
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Sweating
  • Fear of losing control or getting crazy
  • Nausea or abdominal cramps
  • Numbness or tingling sensations in any body part
  • Fear of dying and feeling like heart attack

Most of the symptoms of panic disorder are similar as anxiety disorder except that it occurs with greater intensity and may last for about 10 minutes. Even after physical symptoms pass, it can leave the client quite shaky, frazzled and anxious about the whole experience.

How I treat anxiety disorders?

Since each client and presented problems are unique, each require special treatment plan. One therapy may not be working for all clients even though they are suffering from same emotional issue or mental disorder. Even though all anxiety disorders are interconnected with similar symptoms, each needed to be treated differently. Generally I blend in CBT, Exposure therapy, Relaxation techniques and Mindfulness practices to help clients suffering from anxiety disorders. During CBT we will identify your negative thoughts, challenge their authenticity and work to replace them with more accurate and realistic thoughts. During Exposure therapy, repeated exposures (imaginary or real situation) will be implied to decrease your sensitivity, build confidence and control over fearful situation. We will work in steps to challenge your fears and develop skills to overcome panicking. Therapy may also include CBT assignments, psychoeducation, stress reduction techniques and small activities related to disorder.
